Registration opens November 9th

This course is all about weaving sideways. One of the neat things about tapestry weaving is: the direction you weave a design in progress can be different than the direction you hang a finished design. You can weave your image bottom to top just as you’d display it or you can turn it sideways to weave from “design left” to “design right”.

So in this class we’re exploring tapestry orientation, an aspect of design that is often challenging. We’ll cover…

thinking about orientation like a tapestry weaver
the technique of weaving your piece “design left” to “design right” (or vice versa!)
choosing your the best weaving orientation for your design

Once weaving sideways and weaving your design in the right orientation clicks, you open up a world of weaving possibilities.

Note: This content was originally included in the Tapestry Discovery Box Subscription collaboration between Gist Yarn and Rebecca Mezoff. If you were a member of the Tapestry Discovery Box Subscription for the entirety of the subscription, you do not need to repurchase these classes. You will find the course content still in your Pathwright library here: https://rebeccamezoff.pathwright.com/library/

Please don't worry about being \"behind\" or if you want to use one quarter's yarn to make a different project. We'd still love to see what you're making even if the design is completely different than the suggested project. The techniques videos will be extremely valuable and you can use the techniques in anything you want to weave. Though you will get another project and set of techniques every three months, feel free to choose the techniques and projects you most want to focus on. You can ask questions in the class whenever you want about whatever you're working on.

You can find more information about the course as well as FAQ pages about technical questions on Rebecca's website. https://rebeccamezoff.com/discoverybox

Rebecca Mezoff, author of the bestselling book, The Art of Tapestry Weaving, loves nothing more than helping new tapestry weavers untangle the mystery of making images with yarn. Her fledgling career as an expert latch-hooker died before she made it to middle school, but her love of fiber never abandoned her. Now she creates both tiny and huge tapestries and is often found weaving in her pajamas which she affectionately calls her “home pants”. She runs an online tapestry school which has over 7,000 members and occasionally she leaves the studio to teach weavers in the real world about color, design, dyeing, and technique in tapestry. Her current artistic work focuses on human perception and the long scale of geologic time. Her studio is in Mancos, Colorado. You can find out more about her on her website and blog at www.tapestryweaving.com

In this course we'll explore tapestry orientation. Should weave a design as you'll see it in the finished product or should you turn your cartoon sideways to weave? Which you choose depends on the structures in the image. Sometimes you have to make a choice about what is the important thing to emphasize and sometimes you need to change your design to render it in tapestry. We'll talk about that in this class.

You have access to this class for as long as you'd like it, and I answer questions whenever you have them (I do that on most weekdays). You can also interact with fellow students through discussion questions.

The Tapestry Discovery Box program was originally released as a subscription product in collaboration with Gist Yarn. As part of that subscription, you would get the course and 7 colors of Gist Array yarn every quarter. This re-release of the Tapestry Discovery Box courses includes the course alone. You'll hear me refer to the yarns that came in your box in some of the videos. That does not apply to this version of the course. Please understand if you sign up for this course you will NOT be receiving any yarn. You need to purchase that separately or use something you already have.

You are welcome to order your yarn from Gist and can even get the same colors I used in each course. But you're welcome to substitute any tapestry yarn you'd like. I talk about yarn substitution in this version of the course and am happy to discuss options with you in the class. For most of these TDB courses, the particular colors of yarn are not important and you can choose any color way you like.

If you purchased the Tapestry Discovery Box #3: Weaving Sideways when it was first released in 2023 through Gist Yarn, this is the same class and you don't need to purchase it again.
